In Vedanta, the diversity we see in the world—people, animals, events, even thoughts—is often compared to waves on the surface of the ocean. Each wave looks separate, distinct in shape and size. But underneath, it’s all the same thing: water. No matter how different the forms may appear, they never stop being what they truly are.
This is the heart of Advaita Vedanta’s message. All the variety in the universe is real at the surface level—but underneath it all is a single, unchanging reality: Brahman, infinite consciousness. The illusion of separation is called Maya, and it’s this illusion that makes us identify with individual forms instead of seeing the unity behind everything. The goal of the spiritual path is to see clearly, to wake up from this illusion, and realize that the Self within us—the Atman—is not different from the vast ocean of Brahman. In truth, there are no separate waves—only water.
