In Vedanta, the diversity we perceive in the world is often compared to waves on the surface of the ocean. Each wave appears separate, distinct in shape and size, yet in reality all are nothing but water. This simple image captures the essence of Advaita Vedanta: the variety of the universe is real at the surface level, but beneath it lies a single, unchanging reality — Brahman, infinite consciousness. The illusion of separation is called Maya, the force that leads us to identify with individual forms rather than recognise the unity underlying them. The aim of the spiritual path is to see clearly — to awaken from this misperception and realise that the Self within us, the Atman, is not separate from the vast ocean of Brahman. In truth, there are no separate waves — only water.
