Asana, the third limb of Ashtanga Yoga, refers to the physical postures practiced in yoga. While modern yoga often emphasizes Asana as a form of exercise, its true purpose in Patanjali’s system is to create a steady and comfortable seat for meditation. This is captured in the well-known sutra: Sthira Sukham Asanam—"A posture should be steady, but also pleasant." The ideal Asana is one where the body is both firm and relaxed, allowing the practitioner to sit for extended periods without discomfort or distraction. It strengthens the body, removes restlessness, and refines the nervous system, making it easier to focus the mind. The purpose of Asana is the cultivation of a body that supports the deeper journey of Yoga—leading ultimately to self-realization and inner peace.
